The agro-industrial residue from the fiber of the açai fruit is currently totally wasted in the Amazon region. In Belém, Pará alone, 16 thousand tons of this waste are produced daily.
Giving an appropriate destination to this material, saving the environment and at the same time establishing a partnership with local cooperatives, generating work and income, is the proposal of Ecopainéis de Fibra do Fruto do Açaí.
The idea came after Professor Antonio de Lima Mesquita completed his PhD, from the Materials Engineering Department of the University of Amazonas. Together with two other partners, also professors and researchers at the university, with lines of research on regional economics, cooperatives and social organization, Antonio is at the forefront of the development of technological innovation for the Amazon and for the country.
A business based on Circular Economy, which produces MDP ecopanels from açai fiber and castor oil resin, with the objective of entering the fiberboard market in Brazil, with the furniture industry, architecture offices, civil engineering and final consumers as their target audience.
In the prototype phase, already validated in the national and international market and with a Brazilian patent, the product has a great competitive advantage with the competition, since its raw material is a waste available in large quantities. It underwent several tests, according to Brazilian and international standards – compression, fire, mechanical resistance, physics etc. Everything to test the resistance and durability of the product.
“The Ecopainel has been receiving several acknowledgements, in Brazil and abroad, which have been published in articles in scientific magazines, national and international congresses and the media in general. And it was selected as one of the best innovation projects by the Call for Impact Business in the Amazon”, says Antonio.
The enterprise is currently in the process of preparing a business plan, including the economic and financial projection of a pilot plant.
